IN THE FIELD: Winter’s Icy Grip

This morning we, as did most folks in this part of the country, woke up to a bitterly cold morning. I’m sure it is not as cold here as it has been in other parts of the world, but it sure is chilly. I really feel for you folks that have a much colder climate.

I did find it interesting to see the outside temperature hovering at 0. We don’t usually get to see that number on the thermometer. Even the inside temperature is on the chilly side. As a fellow blogger noted, it is odd dressing in layers while inside. I agree.

You can see yesterday’s outside high temperature had made it up to 44 degrees. And then the cold front came through. The wind started howling around noon yesterday and continued through the night. It’s still blowing relentlessly, bringing the wind chill to somewhere around -22…give or take a few degrees. I think I’ll look through the archive for some summertime photos.

We got down to -10 last night and won’t make it out of single digits today. Stay warm!!!

Yikes!!! We are having a heat wave here today….it’s 8. I’ll just bet there will be an awesome sunset tonight…but don’t know if I could stand out there for long.

Stay warm my friend. When I got up this morning it was 18 which was an improvement to the 11 of the day before. This was not what I expected in central Texas!

    • January 9, 2014 at 9:28 am

I would not have expected to see 18, let alone 11 in Texas! We are getting warmer…the temps are out of the single digits and getting closer to the freezing mark. It’s 22 now!

Your photo makes a good point. It is a nasty winter all across the continent. The yo-yo is going down again tonight, at least we had a reprieve for a couple of days:Oh that wind is nasty too-it takes your breath away and hurts the skin.Stay warm -books and blankets weather.

    • January 9, 2014 at 9:31 am

It sure is books and blankets weather…and hot tea! I finally found one of those full coverage face mask hats. It’s not the best quality but it worked in a pinch! Sharon said I looked like a bank robber with glasses LOL.

that’s funny. Can’t say the winter gear brings out the best in us but it works. Not for the vain…

I feel for ya brother. We are looking forward to a thaw this weekend, yeepee

    • January 9, 2014 at 9:32 am

The thaw is coming so the weather man says. It will be a nice reprieve although I really don’t mind the cold…it’s the relentless winds that get to me.

  6. January 8, 2014 at 7:16 am

Oh dear, stay warm… Thanks and Love, nia

    • January 9, 2014 at 9:35 am

It’s cozy inside and now the sun is shining so it feels even warmer. The forecast said we should have a warmer weekend above freezing and the temps will hold there for a week or so!

  7. January 8, 2014 at 9:20 am

Heavens, David, hope you are all staying safe and warm! Nothing like that here – we’re ‘enjoying’ balmy conditions (combined with howling wind and lashing rain). I hope it warms up for you soon!

    • January 9, 2014 at 9:38 am

Hey howling wind and lashing rain sounds familiar…that’s what we had here before the cold spell! Then we had the winds (spooky) and snow. Now it’s still cold but sunny and the winds are gone! I suspect I will see folks in shorts this weekend. The thaw is is on it’s way!

We got to zero as well (and I did a Beautiful Zero post). Cold, uncomfortable, misearble for some, but oh so pretty to photograph!

    • January 15, 2014 at 10:11 am

Yes it was a bit chilly a few days ago…now we are in a warming trend…it’s above freezing! You are right…it sure was pretty. I heard from one of the top meteorologists from Accu Weather, February is supposed to be very “wintery”…guess time will tell. More photo ops!

  9. January 15, 2014 at 10:26 am

Oh that’s too cold, David! Take care.

I miss winters actually. This place where I currently live has moderate temperatures…in other words “pleasant weather”. So I too go through photo archives but to see some snow photos from home. HE HE 😀

  10. January 15, 2014 at 11:01 am

It’s warmer now. Odd I don’t mind the cold so much…it’s the wind that gets to me. That’s exactly what I have been doing this morning…looking at the photo archives…spring and summer flowers, autumn colors, and even believe it or not, some of last year’s winter photos.

  11. January 17, 2014 at 4:12 pm

We hit the minus degrees for a few days here, too. This week we’ve reached into the 40’s and most of the snow is gone. A true January thaw! But things will be getting back to normal soon. And by that, I mean COLD! 🙂

    • January 17, 2014 at 4:30 pm

We’ve made it to the 40’s also…for 2-3 hours a day and then it’s back into the 20’s…the low 20’s. But…that’s January. The frigid temps are heading our way again…although it will probably be even colder where you are. The snow is all gone here but I heard the next couple of weeks are supposed to be wintery!

  12. January 19, 2014 at 5:23 am

London is pretty much warm and rainy, and actually sunny today… It’s one of those miserable winters when the sun is not shining 🙂 I miss my winter trips back home when the temperature falls 20 degrees below 0 🙂 although it wasn’t too bad back home this year, only -10 😀

    • January 20, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Wow -20 below! Yikes. It hasn’t been that cold here…yet. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be bitterly cold again and that will continue for a few days. Snow is expected for tomorrow also. We’ve been having glorious sunrises and sunsets lately…it sure has been pretty!
