IN THE FIELD: Late Bloomers

lr_dhphotositeDSC_2534

A few weeks ago I was walking up an embankment by a creek’s edge heading for the shade provided by a stand of maple trees. It was cool by the creek, but once I got away from the water I needed relief from the hot sun. In the shade of the old trees was a rather sizable grouping of Hosta plants. I have no idea which variety they are, but the leaves were some of the largest Hosta leaves I have ever seen. Not only was it nice and cool under the trees, but it sure was a pleasant surprise to see these plants blooming this late in the summer.

Yes they are, and different varieties of flowers range in color from white to lavender to purple.

My hostas came, got fried by the heat, and now are crunchy looking. This is a great find!

Crunchy…that’s a great description! They haven’t reached that stage yet around here. Although I have seen some leaves of shrubs and poison ivy starting to change color.

Beautiful, David! It’s nice to see the hostas are still in full bloom. Most of the ones around my neighborhood are done blooming and their leaves are being painfully consumed by slugs!

I haven’t seen many others blooming in folks gardens unless they are in really deep shade…and even then I’ve only seen a few. Slugs…hostas are a gourmet salad for those buggers!

Ugh! I hate those little slugs, I had a really nice rose bush before we moved, and they feast on the leaves and leave the poor plant with nothing but skeletons!

What a lovely flower on this plant!

They are quite pretty and are often overlooked. I like how they appear in various colors from white to dark purple.

I love hostas, but they are mostly appreciated for their leaves. Lovely to see such a great pic of their flowers!

How true and some varieties have insignificant flowers and others are a bit more bold. I like how they emphasize the coolness of a shady spot.

    This is so beautiful. 🙂

Thanks Nandini, most folks plant Hostas for the foliage and often overlook the flowers. I think they are quite pretty and range in color from white to lavender to purple.

I really like Hostas…especially when planted in mass under the canopy of trees.
