IN THE FIELD: First Step Is a Doozy
This is one of the doors on the side of an old train station that last saw commuter rail service in 1981. The station is now occupied by a catering company and the building is often used for wedding receptions. What attracted me to this scene were the colors used in the door and the striped awning contrasting with the stone wall.

You’re right…it does look like it belongs to an old time ice cream parlor! Yummm!
The photo is a doozy too! I expect the door has shown up in many wedding photos.
I bet you are correct Ehpem…especially since there is another roof above the awning providing some more shelter. There is also a small shaded garden with a gazebo for photo ops.
Very nice! I love that bright, red door. I agree with ehpem, I would be surprised if wedding photographers would miss a shot or two by this door (or at least in front of it, considering I don’t see any steps leading to it)
I was walking back to the Jeep when I saw the door. The striped awnings are on all the windows of the building, but this is the only door like this. I suppose the steps were removed a long time ago although I don’t see why.
Interesting that the door has been decorated to be so noticeable, when it doesn’t appear to be very usable as an entry/exit (that “first step” you mentioned). I like the way you framed it straight on. And that stonework is great.
I thought it was a bit odd that it would be so prominent also. I guess the owners have their reasons for not putting the steps back in place. I have to go back and get some more shots of the building. It has undergone a fine restoration. When I was there, it was early afternoon and the light was really harsh and the sky was washed out. We used to live on the other side of the river and passed this station countless times when crossing the bridge.
Like the previous commente (seabluelee), I love the way you have composed this so that the stripes are all (almost) vertical – the whole thing looks as if it’s painted on the wall. Really eye-catching!
DING DING DING Jo guessed it. It IS painted on the wall !!!! That’s trompe l’oeil at it’s best. Sorry Jo, I couldn’t resist. Bad David. In my above comment I mentioned I want to go back. I was just looking at a photo I took of the overall building (highlights are blown out) and there are at least eight striped awnings over the windows. Some windows had flower boxes. It’s really a colorful train station with ornate brackets that look like antlers used as roof supports, a red roof, and a tower.

I had never heard of the word ‘doozy’ before and had to look it up. I’m still not 100% sure 🙂
So the whole thing is a trompe l’oeil effect: amazing!
Hi Meanderer, doozy according to the computer dictionary is “something of outstanding or unique of it’s kind” I.E. that snowstorm tonight is going to be a doozy. (whopper, killer, monstrous etc.) I fooled you too! Actually the door is real…I was joking with Jo. Ok, bad David. I didn’t even notice that it looked like it was painted on the wall until Jo mentioned it. So she fooled me too!
Oh, no: I’m even more confused now 🙂 I have learned a new word though – and you have a new nickname: ‘bad David’ 😉
