IN THE FIELD: Snow Day
Yesterday was another snow day where I live. It wasn’t a big storm, but we did get about three inches of fresh light fluffy snow.
For some reason I wasn’t able to get warm…all day. So I decided to stay inside and play with some close-up photography. I looked around the house for objects that would photograph well, and tried to create images that were not easily recognizable.
Okay, okay, I’ll tell you what the objects in the photos are. The first image is a close up looking down into a drinking glass.
The second is a portion of a glass vase with a blue light placed inside to add some color.
The last image was taken as I was preparing dinner. This is a pot of water with some safflower oil floating on top.
You are probably wondering what in the world was for dinner. Winter comfort food….cheese ravioli in a rich chunky tomato/vegetable sauce. I finally felt warm after devouring more than I should have eaten. After all, the internal furnace needed fuel.

Ahh oatmeal…breakfast of champions!!! The last one came out pretty well. I used a flash and shot it at 1/15 of a second so it just added a wee bit of light.

These are beautiful, David! You’ve certainly got an eye for colour and shape. Don’t know which I like best – I love them all. It proves you can be creative with a camera even when you’re stuck indoors! Glad to hear you’re keeping warm – that sounds like my kind of dinner! 🙂
Thanks Jo, it really is fun to explore stuff around the house. We’re having a heat wave….it’s 25 right now but going down to 9 tonight. Hmmm what shall I make for dinner tonight???

I have days like that too, when, no matter how many sweaters I put on, I just can’t get warm. Your abstracts are beautiful, and your project successful, I’d say. I had no idea what those first two images were. In that last one, the shadows cast by the oil are interesting. (And dinner sounds delicious!)
I wonder why that is..maybe it our bodies saying “you need fuel”! Sounds like a perfect excuse to eat! I wanted to do some more playing yesterday while it was snowing, but I spent most of the day digging out. I had to shovel the back yard for our two snow puppies (Cairns). And the driveway twice. Hmmmmm what shall I make for dinner tonight? It is a snow night.
That feeling of not being able to keep warm is why I left the Northeast and moved to a warmer climate.
Believe me, the thought has crossed our minds many times… but since we both enjoy the change of seasons, that is probably why we stay.
I like the bubbling pan of water and oil. I love the bubbles and the thought of what’s going to be cooked in it – which sounds yummy and warming!
I’ve found that timing is everything when it comes to photos of water and oil. If you wait too long the bubbles are become really small. I’ve tried stirring the water again but that breaks them up even smaller and the oil never regroups into big bubbles. So a do-over is what is next LOL. Dinner was great that night…perfect for a cold evening!
