IN THE FIELD: Who Nose
This past Sunday we took the pups to the city to visit the arboretum. We hadn’t been there in a month or so, and thought it would be a nice treat for them, and for us also.
The recent rains rejuvenated the gardens and everything is doing really well. The cooler early morning temperatures brought out more folks than usual to walk their dogs or to go for a jog in the park.
There are many sculptures placed throughout the grounds, and the one pictured here was just recently installed. I have no idea what this stone sculpture is meant to represent, as there were no identifying marks or descriptive plaques anywhere. It reminds me of the statues called moai, on Easter Island.

It’s different for sure. I have to go back to see if they posted a plaque describing it. When S saw it, she said “whoa, look at the giant nose” Hence the title.
When I saw the photo I immediately thought of Easter Island too, before I’d read your description. Perhaps it is something to do with the proportions and the way it is angled?!
I’m with you Jo, that was my first thought too. Sharon was laughing about the size of the nose…the pups were looking at her with that look…”what’s so funny?”

Thanks Gracie, I thought the title was rather creative on my part…although I have to give my wife credit for saying “look at the giant nose!”
Lincoln’s nose??? Interesting sculpture. Have you ever wondered about the people that will come behind us in life and try to figure out why certain rocks are in places they don’t seem to belong. Everyone landscapes with rocks around here the past ten years, hauling rocks from one place to another…..
Hey that could be it! Funny, I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks of stuff like that. Where we used to live, most of the rock was shale like and everyone used to landscape with rock from across the river in another county. The rocks from there were mostly limestone, quartz, and dolomite. This will drive the archeologists of the future crazy!
Well, it looks like something that I wouldn’t like sitting on my foot!
It would leave a mark that’s for sure! That thing is about a foot taller than me. Several tons there I would guess.

Ok, I’m seeing a dog’s head with long snout, and long ears almost covering his eye. LOL
Hey, you might be onto something here. I see it too! I was just thinking…I wonder what they used to place the stone. There were no tracks in the grass. Hmmmmm
LOL, very interesting! It sure does look like a nose! I thought about Easter Island also.
There are some pretty unusual sculptures in this arboretum. Some make “nose” sense, and some are pretty cool. I’ve featured a few in the past, and there are plenty more for me to photograph. I’ll grab some shots of the others when I go back to see if there is a name or description on this one.
One of those contemporary art pieces 🙂 I think the author lefts lots of room for everyone’s imagination 🙂
I do have to agree with you…this one can be interpreted many ways! When I go back I’ll have to get some shots from different viewpoints.
It DOES look like a giant nose (and will probably acquire that nickname). I’m snot kidding when I say that your title blew me away!
I heard the installers were faced with a stuffed up area to place the sculpture.
